Perched high on the hillside, the Temple of Apollo overlooks Stourhead’s gardens like a watchful guardian. On this autumn morning, the view from beneath the great beech tree was nothing short of magical, the temple bathed in soft light, surrounded by the gold and amber of the turning woods. Below, a single tree blazed with colour, standing out against the darker greens of the valley.
I composed the frame to let the tree’s trunk and the overhanging branches form a natural archway, drawing the viewer into the scene. The dappled light on the forest floor and the soft mist lingering in the distance gave the entire moment a painterly quality. It felt as though time had slowed, the world hushed in reverence to the season.
The Temple of Apollo has long been a symbol of enlightenment and beauty, and here, in the heart of autumn, it seemed to embody both. This image is my attempt to capture that fleeting sense of grandeur and peace—a glimpse of classical perfection hidden within nature’s most ephemeral display.
