About This Photo

Brighton's i360 is a striking addition to the seafront—a 162-metre observation tower that dominates the skyline near the ruins of the West Pier. I'd been wanting to photograph it during sunrise for a while, and this March morning offered the perfect conditions with clear skies and beautiful colours developing.

I positioned myself with my long telephoto lens, using 459mm of focal length to compress the perspective and isolate the pod against the gorgeous pastel sunrise sky. The colours were extraordinary—soft pinks transitioning into cool purples and blues, creating almost a surreal, otherworldly backdrop. The modern, minimalist design of the i360 looks almost like a scene from science fiction against this beautiful natural canvas.

Opened in 2016, the i360 is actually the world's tallest moving observation tower, designed by the same architects who created the London Eye. Love it or hate it (and Brighton locals have strong opinions either way), it's undeniably an iconic part of the modern seafront. Photographing it like this—stripped of context, floating in a gradient of colour—emphasizes its futuristic, almost alien quality.

When you look at this photograph, I want you to feel that sense of contemporary wonder—how modern architecture can create striking silhouettes against timeless natural beauty, adding new chapters to Brighton's ever-evolving coastal story.
