About This Photo

I've always been drawn to minimalist compositions, and Bembridge Lifeboat Station on the Isle of Wight offers exactly that—a simple yet powerful subject isolated against sky and sea. On this December morning, I arrived to find conditions that were perfect for the black and white vision I had in mind: soft, even light and a calm sea that would transform beautifully with a long exposure.

I set up my tripod and composed the shot to emphasize the station's isolation—perched on its wooden stilts, reaching out into the water. Using a 110-second exposure, I transformed the Solent into an almost glass-like surface, creating that seamless gradient where sea and sky merge into infinity. Converting to black and white stripped away all distraction, leaving only the essential elements: structure, reflection, light, and space.

Bembridge's lifeboat station has been saving lives since 1867, and there's something deeply moving about photographing it in this stark, minimalist way. It emphasizes the station's solitary purpose—standing watch at the edge of the world, ready to respond when needed. The long exposure creates this sense of timelessness, as if the station has always been here and always will be.

When you look at this photograph, I want you to feel that sense of quiet contemplation that comes from minimalist art—where less becomes more, and a simple structure against an infinite horizon speaks volumes about resilience, purpose, and the enduring relationship between humanity and the sea.
