Dune: The Sand Dunes of Littlehampton

Most people don't associate the Sussex coast with sand dunes, but West Beach in Littlehampton has some beautiful dune systems that feel almost otherworldly, especially during golden hour. I'd been exploring this area and was captivated by these rolling dunes with their delicate marram grasses swaying in the evening breeze.

I positioned myself low to emphasize the curves and textures of the dunes, using the natural lines created by the sand formations to lead the eye through the composition. The golden evening light was perfect—warm and directional, creating beautiful shadows that accentuated every ripple and undulation in the sand. The grasses added a sense of life and movement, their delicate silhouettes contrasting beautifully with the soft, sculpted sand.

What I love about this image is how it transports you somewhere unexpected. This could be the Sahara or the Scottish coast—there's something universal about sand dunes that speaks to our sense of adventure and exploration. Yet this is right here on the south coast of England, just a short walk from Littlehampton town centre. It's a reminder that dramatic landscapes don't always require exotic destinations.
