About This Photo

This was one of those nights that felt electric. I'd accidentally timed my visit to Mellieħa on August 29th, 2024, to coincide with their annual festa celebrating the Nativity of Our Lady—one of Malta's biggest village celebrations. In Malta, each village festa is a serious affair lasting several days, with religious processions, band marches, decorations, and spectacular fireworks displays that villages compete over.

The whole town was glowing—lights strung across buildings in traditional festa decorations, people lining the streets in their Sunday best, and the Parish Church of the Nativity of Our Lady lit up almost like Christmastime. The church, with its distinctive twin bell towers completed in 1881, becomes the focal point during festa, decorated elaborately inside and out. Maltese festas date back centuries, blending Catholic tradition with Maltese culture in a way that's unique to these islands.

I found a quiet spot across the valley, perfect for enjoying the evening and giving me a full view of the hilltop church. As the fireworks burst into the sky—traditional ground-based catherine wheels and aerial shells—the church became the perfect anchor: golden, still, and strong, while the night danced around it. The pyrotechnics are a huge part of Maltese festa culture, with villages spending thousands of euros on elaborate displays.

I dialled in my settings, capturing an 8-second exposure to record multiple firework bursts in a single frame. It was loud, vibrant, and joyful—a proper Maltese celebration showing community spirit that defines village life on these Mediterranean islands.

This photo captures the joy and energy of a traditional Maltese festa. Fireworks illuminating the valley, festa lights decorating the town, and Mellieħa's 143-year-old church anchoring it all—this is Malta celebrating its patron saints the way it's done for centuries, wrapped up in a single frame showing the island's unique cultural traditions.

When you look at this photograph, I want you to feel that celebration—standing across the valley watching fireworks explode above Mellieħa Parish Church during the festa of the Nativity of Our Lady, where centuries of Maltese Catholic tradition and village pride light up the August night 360 feet above the Mediterranean in Malta.
