About This Photo

There's something I love about blue hour. It's that perfect little window where everything slips into cooler tones before the dark of night sets in. I shot this on May 30th, 2023, after a long day visiting many places around Prague. This was my final stop at Mánesův Bridge, and I welcomed the rest. I had this scene visualized in my head already, so while the sun gradually disappeared I took the opportunity to enjoy the view across the Vltava River toward Charles Bridge.

Charles Bridge—or Karlův most in Czech—was completed in 1402 after 45 years of construction under King Charles IV. Spanning 1,700 feet across the Vltava River, it connects the Old Town (Staré Město) with Lesser Town (Malá Strana). That Gothic tower you see silhouetted—the Old Town Bridge Tower—was completed in 1380 and is considered one of the most impressive Gothic gateways in the world. I watched as the bridge lights came on one by one, reflecting in the river, and I couldn't help but be drawn in by that beautiful contrast of warm golden lamplight against the deep twilight blue sky.

I used my Canon R5 with the 24-105mm lens at 24mm to capture this wide panoramic view, shooting a 25-second exposure at f/18 and ISO 50. The long exposure smoothed the Vltava into glass, capturing those perfect reflections while the blue hour deepened from soft purple to deep navy. The 30 baroque statues lining Charles Bridge—added between 1683 and 1938—create that distinctive silhouette against the illuminated Old Town beyond.

This photo comes complete with the dreamy, calm vibe of Prague right after sunset. It captures a side of Charles Bridge that contrasts with its usual busy hustle—during the day, thousands of tourists cross this 600-year-old pedestrian bridge. The rich blues of twilight combined with glowing golden lamplight offer that pleasing colour combination that instantly grabs your attention. The reflections in the water offer a serene, painterly feel, while the silhouette of the Old Town Bridge Tower and the surrounding Gothic and baroque architecture bring drama and charm to the composition.

When you look at this photograph, I want you to feel that calm—standing on Mánesův Bridge watching Charles Bridge's lights reflect in the Vltava River, where 600 years of Prague history glows against the blue hour sky, and the Gothic Old Town Bridge Tower stands silhouetted in the twilight over the Czech capital.
