I’d been thinking about this shot all day. I’d visited Valletta’s Upper Barrakka Gardens earlier to witness the noon cannon fire—massive sound, crowd loved it. Even then, with the sun high and the sea shimmering, the view toward Birgu really held caught my attention and I got curious about it may look once the lights came on.

So I went back after sunset, waited it out, and just watched the place come alive. That golden glow from the buildings, the deep blue of the harbour, reflections dancing across the water… it just clicked. The kind of moment that feels peaceful and powerful at the same time. There’s a mood to Malta at night that you just can’t replicate in daylight—calmer, deeper, full of quiet energy. So I came back after the sun had gone down and found a really good spot to take this photo from. Now, after the heat of the day had become a ever so slightly cooler evening, the warm golden tones of Birgu’s limestone buildings began to glow and I knew this was the moment I’d been waiting for.

The reflection of those lights across the harbour was just the finishing touch. It’s one of those times that feels like a painting, full of layers of history, texture, and light, all coming together. From the fortress walls to the subtle movement in the water, it all felt like Malta was showing me a side of itself reserved for it’s residents and those willing to stay and see it through.
